Mali : l’accès aux soins du diabète, un défi majeur à relever !

En prélude à la Journée Mondiale du Diabète, célébrée le 14 novembre 2023, à l’hôpital du Mali, l’ONG Santé Diabète et ses partenaires de l’OMS, de la Fédération Internationale du Diabète et des associations locales (Association Malienne de Lutte contre le Diabète, Association des Jeunes Diabétiques du Mali…), a organisé une Conférence de Presse, le 10 novembre 2023, dans la salle de conférence de la Direction Nationale de la Santé et de l’hygiène Publique (DNSHP), pour annoncer la Journée et les activités s’y afférentes. Elles ont profité pour rappeler la situation alarmante du diabète dans le monde, en Afrique et au Mali.

Trois (03) ans après que ce thème triennal (2020-2023) : « l’accès aux soins du diabète », a été retenu pour sensibiliser d’avantage le monde sur la situation alarmante du diabète et apporter les soins nécessaires à plus de 537 millions de personnes atteintes du diabète dans le monde. Malgré des efforts sur le plan national, africain et international, des millions de diabétiques n’ont pas encore accès aux médicaments, aux produits et aux soins essentiels contre le diabète. D’où l’intensification de la campagne de sensibilisation sur les méthodes de prévention du diabète.

Selon Dr Traoré Bah de l’hôpital du Mali, le diabète de type 2, peut être évitable si les personnes surtout adultes réduisaient les facteurs de risques tels que :  manger trop sucré, trop gras et trop salé ; manger moins de viande mais plus de fruits et de légumes, éviter de grignoter entre les repas ; faire du sport au moins 30 minutes, 3 à 4 fois par semaine ; surveiller son poids pour ne pas développer un surpoids ou une obésité ; etc.

Selon les spécialistes, il y’a trois formes de diabète : le diabète de type 1 qui touche les enfants et les jeunes adultes. Leurs pancréas (organe régulateur du sucre dans le sang) ne fabriquent plus d’insuline et doit être compensée par une injection quotidienne d’insuline dans le corps par voie cutanée.

Le diabète de type 2 qui concerne les personnes adultes sédentaires, en surpoids et une mauvaise alimentation. Ceci représente plus de 90% des personnes diabétiques dans le monde.

Le diabète gestationnel qui survient chez la femme enceinte avec une hyperglycémie (taux élevé du sucre dans le sang) avec des risques accrus de complications pendant la grossesse et l’accouchement et le risque de développer le diabète de type 2 après l’accouchement.

Ces chiffres qui font froid aux yeux !

Selon Dr Ibrahim Nientao, de la Fédération Internationale du Diabète (FID), et représentant de l’ONG Santé Diabète, plus de 537 millions de personnes sont aujourd’hui atteintes du diabète dans le monde et plus de 6,7 millions de personnes en sont décidées en en 2021. « La progression de la maladie va se poursuivre, puisse que 783 millions de personnes seront atteintes du diabète d’ici 2045. En Afrique, elle passera de 24 millions en 2021 à 55 millions en 2045.

Le Mali quant à lui, comptait déjà une prévalence du diabète de 2,1% en 2021, mais aussi une prévalence de surpoids de 22% et d’obésité de 5,7% », ajoute-t-il.

D’après Dr Traoré Bah de l’hôpital du Mali, « sur 50 lits d’hospitalisation des personnes souffrant du diabète, 48 lits sont occupés par des personnes ayant des plaies aux pieds. Et 48% de ses pieds sont amputables. Pour le diabète de type 1 (enfants et jeunes adultes), 1.144 enfants diabétiques sont pris en charge gratuitement par l »ONG Santé Diabète »

Pour mieux mener cette sensibilisation, une série d’activité est en cours. Il s’agit d’une caravane de dépistage du diabète à travers la ville de Bamako ; le 17 novembre 2023 est prévue et des journées de dépistage et de sensibilisation sur toute l’étendue du territoire du Mali jusqu’au 30 novembre 2023 ou encore des activités sportives ; etc.
