Le jeudi 16 mai 2024, le Président du Nigéria, non moins Président en exercice de la CEDEAO, a reçu son homologue du Sénégal Bassirou Diomaye Faye. Lors de leur rencontre, Tinubu a invité Faye à « collaborer et à rencontrer les autres frères (le Mali, le Burkina Faso et le Niger) pour les persuader de revenir au bercail. »
Dans le cadre du renforcement des relations entre le Nigeria et le Sénégal, les présidents Bassirou Diomaye Faye et Bola Tinubu se sont entretenus à Abuja. Le Sénégal et le Nigeria ont « un intérêt commun pour la démocratie », a indiqué le président nigérian Bola Ahmed Tinubu, selon un communiqué de la présidence nigériane qui a sanctionné l’audience entre les deux chefs d’Etat, le jeudi 16 mai 2024.
Les échanges entre les deux présidents ont pris en compte la situation qui règne dans la sous-région, où Tinubu est le président en exercice de la Communauté économique des Etats de l’Afrique de l’Ouest (CEDEAO). Le chef de l’Etat nigérian a demandé à son homologue sénégalais de travailler de sorte à ramener les pays membres de l’Alliance des Etats du Sahel (AES) que sont le Burkina Faso, le Mali et le Niger qui ont quitté l’organisation sous régionale, en début d’année. « En tant que Président de la CEDEAO, je vous invite à collaborer et à rencontrer les autres frères pour les persuader de revenir au bercail… », a déclaré Bola Tinubu.
Les deux chefs d’Etat se sont engagés également à « promouvoir la démocratie » en Afrique de l’Ouest. « La démocratie constitutionnelle est ce que le Sénégal a prouvé au reste du monde et à l’Afrique. C’est une joie de vous avoir ici », a indiqué Tinubu à Faye, selon le communiqué. Et le président nigérian d’ajouter: « Nous sommes à un moment critique de l’histoire de la démocratie constitutionnelle, en particulier en Afrique de l’Ouest. Ce que vous avez entrepris, une lutte axée sur la liberté, est remarquable ».
