Le Niger a annoncé, fin janvier dernier, son retrait de l’institution régionale, avec le Burkina et le Mali avec qui il forme l’Alliance des États du Sahel.
La Communauté économique des États de l’Afrique de l’ouest (Cédéao) sous-régionale tiendra, samedi 24 février 2024, un sommet extraordinaire à Abuja au Nigeria, rapportent plusieurs sources.
Elles affirment que le principal dossier de cette rencontre porte sur le Niger, notamment les sanctions imposée à ce pays sahélien depuis le 26 juillet 2023, suite au putsch du Conseil national pour la sauvegarde de la patrie contre Mohamed Bazoum.
Des sources croient savoir que le sommet extraordinaire de la Cédéao pourra acter la levée des sanctions contre le Niger.
Lors de son sommet de décembre 2023, l’organisation communautaire avait affirmé être prêt à alléger l’embargo contre le Niger à condition que Niamey libère Mohamed Bazoum et définit une durée de transition raisonnable.
Dans un récent entretien avec la télévision publique nigérienne, le général Abdourahmane Tiani, chef de l’Etat nigerien a révélé que la junte était prête à libérer Bazoum qui aurait opposé un niet catégorique.
Le sommet extraordinaire des chefs d’Etat intervient dans un contexte marqué par le retrait du Niger, du Mali et du Burkina de la Cédéao. Un retrait que ces pays du Sahel, qui ont créé en septembre 2023 l’Alliance des États du Sahel, ont expliqué par l’abandon par l’institution communautaire des principes de ses pères fondateurs.
Début février, le Conseil de Médiation et de Sécurité au niveau ministériel de la Cédéao a qualifié les arguments des pays frondeurs de fallacieux. Ces derniers ont insisté sur l’irrévocabilité de leur décision.
