Le Niger est intéressé par la mise en place d’une base militaire à part entière des forces armées russes dans un contexte de menaces terroristes, a déclaré le consul honoraire de Russie au Niger, M. Addo Iro.
« Nous ne pouvons pas nous permettre de dire que la situation en matière de sécurité s’est améliorée. Notre état fait tout ce qui est possible pour au moins réduire le nombre d’attaques terroristes. Nous sommes intéressés par l’installation d’une base militaire russe à part entière, nous sommes prêts à la recevoir », a-t-il déclaré aux Izvestia.
Le ministère de la défense nationale et le ministère des affaires étrangères du Niger n’ont pas répondu aux demandes de renseignements de l’agence concernant l’ouverture éventuelle d’une base russe sur le territoire du pays.
Le colonel-général Iounous-Bek Evkourov, vice-ministre russe de la défense, s’est rendu à Niamey au début du mois de juin, où il a été reçu par le chef de la transition, Abdourahmane Tiani. Des instructeurs militaires russes sont présents au Niger depuis le mois d’avril.
Le chef d’état-major de l’arme terrestre de la république, le colonel Mamane Sani Kiaw, a déclaré début juin que les États-Unis avaient commencé à retirer leurs troupes du territoire nigérien.
En mars, le Niger a rompu un accord militaire avec les États-Unis qui prévoyait l’installation d’une base de drones américains dans le nord du pays. Les autorités de la république ont déclaré que cet accord était imposé et ne servait pas les intérêts de la population. À la fin de l’année 2023, il y avait environ 1 100 militaires américains au Niger, la plupart d’entre eux étant stationnés sur une base de l’armée de l’air près d’Agadez.
