Après deux années d’exercice du pouvoir, le président nigérien Mohamed Bazoum a été renversé le mercredi dernier par sa garde prétorienne. Ce coup d’Etat au Niger est un véritable camouflet pour la Cédéao qui a échoué dans sa première tentative de médiation et un revers cinglant pour Bola Ahmed Tinubu, le président en exerce de ladite institution sous-régionale. Mais aussi pour les Occidentaux qui ont fait de Niamey, le régulateur du jeu de positionnement entre l’Est et l’Ouest.

Depuis 2020, on assiste au printemps des coups d’Etat dans les pays sahéliens gangrenés par la mal gouvernance et une insécurité grandissante orchestrée par les groupes terroristes qui sévissent dans la région du Sahel.

Tout comme le Mali et le Burkina, les militaires qui ont renversé la semaine dernière le pouvoir du président nigérien Mohamed Bazoum ont surfé sur la dégradation de la situation sécuritaire ainsi que la mauvaise gouvernance politique, économique et sociale du pays.

Ce coup d’Etat au Niger apparaît comme un véritable camouflet pour la Communauté économique des Etats de l’Afrique de l’Ouest qui a dépêché dès les premières heures des événements à Niamey des émissaires pour essayer de calmer la situation afin de trouver une issue favorable entre les mutins et Bazoum.

En seulement trois semaines à la tête de la Cédéao, ce énième putsch militaire au Niger semble être comme un revers cinglant, voire une mise à l’épreuve pour Bola Ahmed Tinubu qui a affirmé lors de sa prise de fonctions qu’il ne permettra jamais que les coups d’Etat se succèdent en Afrique de l’Ouest en faisant de la démocratie le socle de son action à la tête de l’organisation sous-régionale.

Considéré comme l’un des rares pays stables du Sahel, et particulièrement du Liptako Gourma à être à l’abri de putsch militaire depuis plus d’une dizaine d’années, le basculement du Niger dans un régime militaire va changer la donne géopolitique et stratégique des Occidentaux qui en font du Niger leur tête de pont dans le Sahel après le départ de la force Barkhane du Mali.
